Rest is recalibration. Beneath the quiet hours, the body restores itself, the mind settles its fractures, and the Echo records what the soul has survived.</span> The **Long Rest RAW** page is a player-facing reference for how Long Rests work under the standard D&D 2024 rules. This page covers only the rules as written. For Eternal Night's optional Long Rest advancement layer, see [[Long Rest Development]]. For tool proficiency, tool use, and crafting rules that may interact with Long Rest light activity, see [[Tools and Crafting]]. ## Supporting Pages | Page | Purpose | |---|---| | [[Long Rest Development]] | Explains the optional Eternal Night system for quiet training, reflection, tool learning, language learning, weapon training, and small preparation projects during Long Rest light activity. | | [[Tools and Crafting]] | Explains how tools work in D&D 2024, including tool proficiency, Utilize actions, crafting, and how tools can support Long Rest Development. | The rules on this page apply first. Homebrew development and crafting options cannot override the official Long Rest requirements. ## Rules as Written A **Long Rest** is a period of extended downtime lasting at least **8 hours**. It is available to any creature that has at least **1 Hit Point** when the rest begins. During a Long Rest, the character must sleep for at least **6 hours** and may perform no more than **2 hours of light activity**. This light activity can include reading, talking, eating, or standing watch. After a character finishes a Long Rest, they must wait at least **16 hours** before beginning another Long Rest. The Long Rest restores the character’s body, mind, and certain game resources. It also creates a natural pause in the story where the party can process what happened, prepare for what comes next, and make small choices that affect their ongoing development. While sleeping, the character has the **Unconscious** condition. When the Long Rest finishes, the character gains the listed Long Rest benefits, restores eligible resources, and may make any choices their class or features allow after a Long Rest. ## Rest Structure A Long Rest is divided into sleep, light activity, and recovery. | Requirement | Rule | |---|---| | Total Duration | At least 8 hours | | Required Sleep | At least 6 hours | | Light Activity Limit | No more than 2 hours | | Required Hit Points | The creature must have at least 1 Hit Point to start | | Repeat Limit | A creature must wait at least 16 hours after finishing a Long Rest before starting another | ## Light Activity A character can perform up to **2 hours of light activity** during a Long Rest. Light activity should be quiet, low effort, and non-strenuous. It should not involve danger, combat, intense travel, or major exertion. | Light Activity | Allowed? | Notes | |---|---:|---| | Reading | Yes | Counts toward the 2-hour light activity limit. | | Talking | Yes | Quiet conversation is allowed. | | Eating | Yes | Meals can be part of the rest. | | Standing Watch | Yes | Counts toward the 2-hour light activity limit. | | Reviewing Notes | Yes | Appropriate if calm and non-strenuous. | | Maintaining Gear | Usually | Minor care is appropriate. Full crafting may require the rules in [[Tools and Crafting]]. | | Quiet Prayer or Meditation | Usually | Appropriate if it does not involve casting a leveled spell. | | Casting Cantrips | Usually | Cantrips do not automatically interrupt the rest, but the GM decides if the activity remains light. | | Tool Practice | Usually | Appropriate if calm, quiet, and limited to the 2-hour light activity window. See [[Long Rest Development]] and [[Tools and Crafting]]. | ### Eternal Night Framing In Eternal Night, light activity during a Long Rest can represent small personal moments inside the world of Yureihara. A character might sit beneath lantern light, sharpen a blade, review a map, speak quietly with another Marebito, practice a tool, study a language, or listen to MAIKO interpret fragments of the Echo Terminal. These moments should remain gentle. They are not full downtime scenes unless the GM says otherwise. For optional character development during this light activity, see [[Long Rest Development]]. For tool rules, tool proficiency, and crafting limits, see [[Tools and Crafting]]. ## Interruptions A Long Rest is interrupted if any of the following happen. | Interruption | Result | |---|---| | Rolling Initiative | The Long Rest is stopped. | | Casting a spell other than a cantrip | The Long Rest is stopped. | | Taking any damage | The Long Rest is stopped. | | 1 hour of walking or other physical exertion | The Long Rest is stopped. | If the character rested for at least **1 hour** before the interruption, they gain the benefits of a **Short Rest** instead. A Long Rest can be resumed immediately after an interruption. If it is resumed, the rest requires **1 additional hour per interruption** to finish. ## Universal Benefits When a character successfully finishes a Long Rest, they gain the following benefits. | Benefit | Result | |---|---| | Hit Points | Regain all lost Hit Points. | | Hit Point Dice | Regain all spent Hit Point Dice. | | Hit Point Maximum | If the character’s Hit Point maximum was reduced, it returns to normal. | | Ability Scores | If any ability scores were reduced, they return to normal. | | Exhaustion | If the character has Exhaustion, its level decreases by 1. | | Special Features | Features that recharge on a Long Rest recharge as described in their own rules. | These benefits happen when the Long Rest is completed, not when it begins. ## Spell Preparation Some classes can change prepared spells when they finish a Long Rest. Other classes normally change spells only when they gain a level. ### Classes That Can Change Prepared Spells | Class | Long Rest Spell Preparation | |---|---| | Cleric | Can change any prepared Cleric spells. | | Druid | Can change any prepared Druid spells. | | Paladin | Can replace one prepared Paladin spell. | | Ranger | Can replace one prepared Ranger spell. | | Wizard | Can change any prepared Wizard spells from the spellbook. | ### Classes That Do Not Normally Change Spells on a Long Rest | Class | When They Normally Change Spells | |---|---| | Bard | When gaining a level. | | Sorcerer | When gaining a level. | | Warlock | When gaining a level. | | Arcane Trickster Rogue | When gaining a Rogue level. | | Eldritch Knight Fighter | Uses subclass rules, not normal Long Rest preparation. | ## What Players May Not Do A Long Rest is not a full downtime period unless the GM expands it into one. By rules as written, certain actions can interrupt the rest or exceed the light activity limit. | Activity | Allowed During Long Rest? | Reason | |---|---:|---| | Combat | No | Rolling Initiative interrupts the rest. | | Taking Damage | No | Taking any damage interrupts the rest. | | Casting a Leveled Spell | No | Casting a spell other than a cantrip interrupts the rest. | | Traveling for 1 Hour | No | 1 hour of walking interrupts the rest. | | Heavy Physical Work | No | Physical exertion can interrupt the rest. | | Full Crafting Projects | Usually No | This normally belongs to crafting or downtime rules, not Long Rest light activity. See [[Tools and Crafting]]. | | Intense Training | Usually No | Training should not exceed light activity unless handled by GM rules. | | Major Exploration | No | Exploration that creates risk or movement is not resting. | The GM decides whether a proposed activity still counts as light activity. >> **SYSTEM NOTICE** >> Long Rest protocol recognizes physical recovery and resource restoration. >> Development tracking is handled by the supporting page. >> Tool and crafting permissions are governed by the supporting page. >> >> Supporting pages: [[Long Rest Development]], [[Tools and Crafting]] >> >> Logged by MAIKO // Long Rest RAW v1.1
