It is not unique to [[Eternal Night]], nor is it limited to [[Yureihara]]. Wherever AT Echo’s influence reaches, the Echo Terminal may appear as a guide, archive, communication vessel, tactical tool, and impossible point of connection. It finds you, always. The device defies simple classification. It appears to be a fusion of arcane technology and unknowable design, sleek, obsidian-toned, cold to the touch, and faintly humming with unseen energy. It is indestructible, untraceable, and strangely personal. If lost, stolen, discarded, or destroyed, it inexplicably reappears beside its linked user the next time they wake. No one knows who truly created the Echo Terminal, or whether it was created at all. ## Appearance At first glance, an Echo Terminal resembles a compact tablet-like artifact with a smooth black surface and a reactive central display. Its screen shifts according to the user’s need, presenting anything from glowing magical glyphs to high-resolution tactical data. The interface may display maps, bestiaries, classified logs, spell codices, faction records, local history, system notices, and other forms of information. Its outer frame is durable and seamless, with no visible ports, hinges, seams, maker’s marks, or obvious method of construction. When active, the Echo Terminal emits a clean, quiet glow. The color, intensity, and behavior of this light may change depending on the world, the user, the danger nearby, or the presence of [[MAIKO]]. ## Common Knowledge Echo-linked individuals understand the Echo Terminal as a personal system tool, though its exact nature is rarely understood. Some believe it is advanced technology. Others believe it is a relic, a spiritual vessel, a divine tablet, or a fragment of something beyond mortal design. In [[Eternal Night]], Marebito recognize the Echo Terminal as the familiar interface through which they once accessed menus, maps, information, and guidance. Game NPCs may view it as a sacred object, foreign instrument, spirit device, or strange Marebito relic. Across all AT Echo worlds, the Echo Terminal acts as a bridge between the individual and [[MAIKO]], the Modern Artificial Intelligence Knowledge Oracle. MAIKO appears through the terminal as guide, observer, interpreter, and warning system, though even she does not seem to fully understand every layer of the device. ## Known Functions The Echo Terminal can serve many purposes depending on the world, the user, and the stability of the surrounding reality. - Displaying system notices - Providing maps and location data - Recording bestiary entries - Storing faction records and classified logs - Displaying spell codices and lore archives - Translating or interpreting unfamiliar information - Offering tactical data during dangerous situations - Connecting the user to [[MAIKO]] - Preserving important messages, visions, or warnings - Reappearing beside its linked user after being lost - Responding to touch, voice, proximity, or apparent intent ## Connection to MAIKO The Echo Terminal acts as the primary vessel through which [[MAIKO]] communicates with Echo-linked individuals. Through it, she can offer guidance, answer questions, display information, and interpret strange phenomena. However, MAIKO is not simply a program inside the device. The relationship between MAIKO and the Echo Terminal is deeper and far less understood. The terminal appears to house, channel, or reveal her presence depending on the conditions of the world around it. In some moments, MAIKO seems fully aware and responsive. In others, her messages become fragmented, delayed, altered, or uncertain. Whether this is caused by system instability, outside interference, or the terminal itself remains unknown. ## Eternal Night Manifestation Within [[Eternal Night]], the Echo Terminal once functioned as a familiar game interface for the Marebito. Before the [[Twilight Fracture]], it supported guidance, communication, system information, maps, menus, quest notices, and MAIKO’s presence. After the Twilight Fracture, many Echo Terminals became unreliable or completely unresponsive. Some turned black and silent. Others flickered with unstable messages. Commands that once worked without question began to fail, distort, or produce deeply concerning results. For the Marebito trapped in Yureihara, the failure of the Echo Terminals confirmed a terrible truth. The old systems could no longer be trusted. ## Current Concerns Since the Twilight Fracture, the Echo Terminal’s behavior in Eternal Night has become increasingly unstable. Logout access is unavailable, external server paths are unreachable, and local reality appears to be changing in ways the device cannot fully explain. Yet the Echo Terminal itself remains. It cannot be discarded. It cannot be destroyed. It cannot be escaped. The most troubling question is no longer what the terminal can do. It is what it still knows.
