For ten years, travelers, pilgrims, players, and wandering Marebito could visit the outer grounds, but none could pass through the shrine gates. The temple doors remained sealed and silent from the first day [[Eternal Night]] opened. During the [[Ten Year Anniversary Festival]], [[Hiroshi the Herald]] announced that Torii Mori had opened for the [[Trial of the Forgotten Code]]. No force broke the seal. No ritual was performed. No official record explained the change. The gates simply stood unbound. Torii Mori is not merely a forest of paths and gates. It is a threshold site built around sealed history, ritual obedience, fox imagery, and the dangerous memory of something buried beneath the mountain. The shrine watches those who enter, rewards reverence, punishes impatience, and reveals that the [[Twilight Fracture]] may have roots far older than the public systems of the game. ## Description The road to Torii Mori bends through a grove of towering crimson trees. The air grows cooler near the shrine, carrying the quiet scent of wet stone, incense, and fallen leaves. Red leaves drift through the air like embers on a gentle wind, gathering across the stone courtyard and along the wooden walkway that leads toward the temple doors. The shrine rises in elegant silence. Lacquered beams glow softly in the fading light. Stone lanterns stand by the entrance, their flames burning steadily despite the wind. The courtyard feels calm, almost reverent, as if the shrine itself watches every step. For most of Eternal Night's history, Torii Mori was visible but closed. Its grounds could be visited, but its deeper halls could not be entered. After the Trial of the Forgotten Code began, the gates opened for the first time since launch. For the first time in ten years, Torii Mori welcomed visitors. ## Key Locations & NPCs ### [[Torii Mori Shrine]] The main shrine complex within the crimson forest. Its gates were sealed for ten years before opening during the [[Trial of the Forgotten Code]]. The shrine contains sacred chambers, ritual puzzles, hidden passages, and evidence of an ancient seal tied to the fate of [[Yureihara]]. ### [[Temple Courtyard]] A quiet courtyard crossed by a long wooden walkway leading toward the temple doors. Weathered benches rest on either side of the path, their surfaces dusted with fallen red leaves. The air feels watchful and still. Two ceremonial bronze gongs stand within the courtyard. One moves on its own, swaying gently and ringing in slow intervals without any visible force. ### [[Fox Pawprint Path]] A series of flat stone prayer rocks leads toward the temple doors. Each stone bears the imprint of a small fox paw pressed into the surface as if stamped into wet clay. One of the stones briefly pixelates and reforms, revealing that the shrine is not fully separate from unstable system behavior. ### [[Koi Pond]] A small stone pond rests near the courtyard, fed by a bamboo shishi odoshi. Several koi glide beneath the surface, though one bright orange koi may be found flopping weakly on the grass. Returning it to the water causes it to disappear beneath the surface and rewards the act of compassion. ### [[Shrine Offering Box]] A traditional wooden offering box stands before the shrine doors. A few scattered coins rest within the slatted opening, suggesting that someone visited recently. Sincere offerings cause the bell to ring softly on its own, acknowledging the gesture without granting an immediate visible reward. ### [[Hidden East Passage]] A concealed sliding panel lies beyond the temple walls, hidden within uneven stonework. The warning found near [[Yasu Bend]] says: > "Turn back." > "But if you must go..." > "Look to the east." This clue leads toward the hidden passage and lowers the difficulty of discovering it. ### [[Temple Entry Hall]] The entry hall smells faintly of incense and contains a stone tablet carved with a warning: > "Cleanse the spirit before entering the sacred hall." A small basin of clear water rests beside the tablet. Those who cleanse themselves before entering receive protection. Those who step onto the tatami without cleansing draw the attention of guardian spirit beasts. ### [[Seer's Basin Chamber]] A circular chamber containing a pale stone basin etched with faded symbols. The water is unnaturally still until approached, then reveals ancient visions tied to the sealing of the land, the darkness beneath Torii Mori, and the prophecy of the shrine. The basin reveals that priests once placed seals throughout the forest to bind a fracture and hold darkness beneath the mountain. It also reveals a warning from an ancient seer: > "The seal will weaken." > "Not by blade." > "Not by war." > "But by time." > "When the seal breaks, the world will fracture." ### [[Glyph Hallway]] A narrow hallway lined with five glowing glyphs and sealed by pale blue energy. An old scroll instructs travelers: > "The shrine does not open for the impatient." > "Walk the path with reverence." > "Follow that which guides, not that which shines." Faint fox pawprints reveal the correct path across the glyphs. Incorrect steps reset the traveler to the shrine entrance. Correct steps open the sealed door, though a hidden stone barrier rises behind the party once the path is accepted. ### [[Shrine Seal Workshop]] A small workspace containing paper seals, brushes, inkstones, and unfinished ofuda charms. The ink is still wet, suggesting that someone was working there recently and left in a hurry. ### [[Fox Statue Chamber]] A quiet chamber watched by three smaller fox statues and one larger guardian statue. A scroll explains: > "The watchers do not lead." > "They follow." > "When they bow to the guardian..." > "The path is revealed." The smaller statues must be turned to face and bow toward the larger guardian. When aligned properly, the chamber acknowledges the gesture and reveals a hidden passage. ### [[Secret Cave of the Last Guardian]] A natural cavern hidden beyond the shrine. It contains the skeletal remains of a massive dragon and a seated humanoid skeleton holding an elegant yumi. Behind them, a large stone embedded in the cave wall glows with shifting glyphs. The chamber suggests that someone or something once made a final stand within Torii Mori. The glowing stone appears less like writing and more like a system, seal, or ancient mechanism.
